Re: District Contest Information

We hope that you will support the Logan Elm Advanced Choir and Women of the Advanced Choir on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Thomas Worthington High School for the OMEA District Choir Contest.  The bus will be leaving at 9:00 AM from McDowell School and will return at approximately 6:30 PM.  The Women’s Choir will perform at 1:40 PM and the Advanced Choir will perform at 2:40 PM. The bus will be stopping on the way home for dinner at a fast food restaurant.  Students may ride home with there parents by providing a note.  Having parent permission to ride home is school policy. Students must ride the bus to the event, this is also school policy.  If possible, please bring parent notes prior to Saturday, March 7, 2009 so there isn’t any confusion.  A phone call from a parent at the time of the event is not acceptable.  A reminder to students and parents that there is no taping of or photography during this event and there is also a need for proper behavior or the choir could be disqualified.  All groups will be performing in the Gymnasium and sight reading will be held in the band/choir room.  All students are asked to dress appropriately for this event we are representing Logan Elm High School. Attached you will find a driving directions to Thomas Worthington High School.  Please take all belongings off the bus upon arriving.

Thanks for supporting the Logan Elm Music Department.

Grades:

Students should have a positive musical experience in a large performing group, and learn how to make music a part of their life.  To achieve this goal the techniques of making music will be stressed – vocal production, reading notation, sight-reading, etc.  The concerts will demonstrate the skills learned through the stylistically and culturally diverse repertoire studied.  The grade is then based equally on these criteria:

            1. Participation and behavior in class

            2. Concert performance

                        a. Excused absences (illness, death in the family, family vacation) must be made up by the end of the grading period.  Students may either sing the concert material for the director at a scheduled time or turn in a written report on a composer chosen by the director.  A note or a phone call must be received prior to the concert for absences to be excused.

                        b. Unexcused absences (lack of transportation, sports events, other concerts, family dinners, etc.) may not be made up and all points will be lost.

            3. Written work

                        a. Post Concert Journals

                        b. Folder Check

                        c. Skill Check

Please fell free to call or send a note if you have questions or concerns.  You can also check the schools web site at www.loganelm.net  click on music, then choir for calendars and concert information. I hope to see you at the concerts.

Choir Grading Procedure
