IN THE KNOW WINS
MID-STATE ACADEMIC LEAGUE TOURNAMENT!

First Championship since 1995

In what will be remembered as one of the most thrilling events in Mid-State Academic League history, the Logan Elm In The Know Team won four games en route to the Championship of the Mid-State Academic League Tournament. In three of the four victories the Braves had to come from behind against their opponents in the third and final period of play in order to win, with LE outscoring their opponents an average of 105 to 55 in the final frame. In the first round Logan Elm, the 5th seed in the tournament based on regular season record, defeated 12th seed Canal Winchester, avenging a loss in the regular season in the process. In the second round the Braves defeated 13th seed Newark Catholic. Logan Elm scored the first 45 points of the third period take the lead for good. The semifinals brought 1st seed Granville, whom the Braves had beaten in the regular season. Logan Elm scored their tournament high in points for a period with 120 to take the win. The opponent in the final was 2nd seed Fairfield Union, who had defeated Logan Elm in week 1 of regular season play. Once again the third period was decisive for Logan Elm as they scored the first 50 points of the period to take the lead. Fairfield Union then came back with a 25-point run to tie the game, but Logan Elm took its decisive lead in the game in the final minute of play. The final game was tied on 7 different occasions and saw 4 lead changes.

The championship is Logan Elm’s first academic title of any kind since 1995. The victory qualifies Logan Elm for the Ohio Academic Competition Regional Tournament to be held April 28. The OAC only accepts tournament winners into its field, making it the most prestigious academic tournament in the state. The top two teams in each of the six regional tournaments will advance to the OAC State Tournament at Columbus State Community College. Logan Elm’s match record now stands at 18-9 overall and 14-6 in the MSL (tournament included).

Students upset the Teachers in In The Know!

Advised by Mr. Campbell

In the Know meets once a week for practice and also has a competition each week against other schools. The competition includes a team of each school answering trivia style questions to obtain the higher score. The team that has achieved the most wins out of the district competitions goes on the state competitions. In the Know is fun and looks great on college applications.

Students upset the Teachers in In The Know!

In a fast paced and very well played game, the In The Know team of Brenton
Wolfe, Martin Dalefield, Kent Wolfe, Matt Briner, and Andy Wright defeated
the Logan Elm Teachers 270 to 250 on Friday.  The game opened up with both
teams matching each other question for question.  The first 9 questions
were answered correctly by the two teams, with teachers gaining a slight
50-40 advantage.  The teachers then pressed their advantage throughout the
rest of the first period, while students struggled for a time, only
scoring 25 points the rest of the period.  At the end of the first period
the teachers had a 115 to 65 lead and looked to be running away with the
game.  However, fortunes were radically reversed in the second period with
the students taking the lead just before the midpoint of the period.  A
key point in the rally came when the students correctly answered a U.S.
History question prompting Mr. Beavers to ask "Did I even teach you
that?"  (No, he didn't!)  Another key moment in the teacher's
struggles came when Mr. Peloquin missed a Shakespeare question (gasp!).  Meanwhile, the
students were able to increase their lead up to as many as 50 points late
in the period, scoring a whopping 130 points in the second stanza.  A late
surge in by the teachers kept things close, and the score at the end of
the second period was 195 to 165 in favor of the students.  That surge
continued for the teachers in the third and final period, and the scored
was tied at 195 each within the first two minutes.  After a trading a
couple of questions, the students were able to take advantage again on
current events and contemporary literature.  The teachers tried to mount
yet another comeback but were unable to do so when the final buzzer sound
leaving the bitter and shocking taste of defeat.  There were immediate
calls for a rematch by the teachers that may be attampted at some later
date.  There were also unconfirmed rumors that Mr. Campbell, the In The
Know Coach and moderator for this event, may be brought to the teachers'
side to "restore some order" to the chaos.  Regardless of
whether or not a rematch comes, the students will enjoy their victory over
the Christmas Break, but when they come back to school it will be back to business.  The Braves
will make their return to the Mid-State Academic League following a year's
absence on January 24, 2007 when they travel to neighboring Circleville to
face the Tigers for the second time this season.  They will also face
Fairfield Union in a match following the Circleville game.  A complete
schedule of league matches will be released following the break.
