MATH DEPARTMENT

Applied Math:  Credit 1
Prereq:
Teacher/Counselor Placement

This subject is a refresher or remedial course in elementary general mathematics with emphasis on arithmetic.  It is planned for students who need extra work to improve their basic skills.  Topics include whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, measurements, geometry, data analysis, probability, solving equations and word problems.

OGT Math Intervention/Independent Study:  Credit ½ (semester)

This course is required for students who have failed the OGT or are “at risk” of failing based on teacher evaluation.   Students who are credit deficient in this subject area may use this course as an independent study to gain needed graduation credit.

Pre-Algebra:  Credit 1

This course includes a careful study of arithmetic with attention to basic skills and structure, as well as sound development of the real number system.  Fundamental concepts of algebra will be covered to prepare the student for Algebra 1.

Integrated Math:  Credit 1, semester block course (By placement only)
Prereq:  Students will enter this course by placement from the guidance counselors and math teachers.  This course is designed for students who need to develop adequate math skills at the Algebra 1 level.

Algebra 1/Geometry:  Credit 1
Prereq:  “C” or better in Pre-Algebra and teacher recommendation.

Algebra 1/Geometry presents the language and techniques used in higher math.  It is designed to teach fundamental procedures in real numbers, equations, factoring, scientific notation, unit conversions, polynomials and problem solving, functions, graphing, Pythagorean theorem, exponents and roots, area, quadratic equations, perimeter, volume, and surface areas.

Geometry:  Credit 1
Prereq: Algebra I and teacher recommendation

In this subject emphasis is placed on reasoning.  Geometry will include the following topics: Inductive reasoning, geometric constructions, discovering geometry, congruence, circles, area Pythagorean theorem, similarity, volumes, trigonometry and geometric proof.

Algebra 2/Geometry:  Credit 1
Prereq:  “C” or better in Algebra 1 and teacher recommendation.

Topics include solving more complex equations and inequalities, radicals, roots of quadratic equations, properties of real numbers, logarithms, polynomials, vectors, polar and rectangular coordinate systems, word problems, developing geometric concepts and writing proof outlines, developing physics and chemistry (real world) problems, probability, and statistics.

Transition to College Math:  Credit 1.  Seniors or early graduates.
Prereq:  Algebra II or Geometry.

This is a math review of Algebra and Geometry for college-bound students who do not need the emphasis of Algebra 3/Trigonometry.

Algebra 3/ Trigonometry:  Credit 1
Prereq:  “C” or better in Algebra 2/Geometry.

The student will learn the six trigonometry functions and how to apply them to basic problems and in proofs.  Vector analysis, matrices, determinants, probability, statistics, proofs by mathematical induction, and other advanced topics are also included.

Pre-Calculus:  Credit 1
Prereq:  “C” or better in Algebra 3/Trigonometry.

The primary aim of this course is to present materials that will adequately prepare the student for further study of mathematics at the college level.  Fundamental notions of algebra, trigonometry and geometry are merged into a sequence of importance of being able to visualize and graphically represent mathematical expressions.  Additional topics include exponential and logarithmic functions, polar coordinates, vectors and determinants, sequences and series, statistics, probability and introduction to Calculus.

Calculus:  AP Calculus AB, Credit 1
Prereq:  “C” or better in pre-calculus.  Fee required.

Calculus covers all topics in the Advanced Placement Calculus AB Syllabus.  The instruction takes full advantage of graphing calculators, using them for visual demonstrations of concepts and confirming calculations.  The student must take the AP exam in the spring for possible college credit.  Approximate cost is 80.00 for the test.
