Ceramic Students going to the Olympics

Jennifer’s T-shirt design for Team

Last year was our first time going to the “Feats of Clay” Olympics in Columbus. This season 16 of our students will going to Olympics of Clay at the Columbus College of Art & Design May 16. In the next few weeks we will be practicing for the competition in the art room and taking video and photos of our feats with clay.

Our team must perform various clay skillz the day of the competition. The first is “Cylinder Stacking”. This competition is fast paced and Owen must throw multiple cylinders in 10 minutes and the other 3 members must remove the cylinder and stack them as high as possible (height is everything). The second phase is watching Ashlee Dickson throw as many tea cups as she can in 10 minutes. Last season a team from Columbus had a student throw over 100. Our team must have a member remove it from the wheel, and others to place the handle on it. The third competition is a “No Hands Throwing” on the wheel. We must throw a pot using every other part of our body except our hands. It is very tough but fun to watch and practice. The last competition is to create a hand built vessel with coils that reaches as high as possible. Our team will be working hard until the competition. Stayed tuned for updates, photos, and results of our competition day in May.

Ceramics working to make paper sculptures

by hbennett in Uncategorized

This is a project that takes patience and precision. The students have to create a 3Dimensional sculpture that pops off the page. Some have overlapped, built up paper, used folds and paper scoring to make these sculptures. Enjoy viewing and commenting on the artworks that get uploaded on this page.

Ceramics classes on the potter’s Wheel

by hbennett in Uncategorized

Our ceramic classes are working hard to throw on the wheel. Sometimes I have to help and aid but all in all they have really gotten the hang of it. This is not an easy task and some have even attempted it for several days (Ashley Vanbibber ha ha ha). Just kidding! Ashley has a 2 piece set in the case by the library that is very good. Others have been doing great on the wheel and their work will be uploaded later!

Vegas Nights Via Berger Hospital

by hbennett in Uncategorized

Hey all! The Project is huge. Your very own Owen Carstensen was commissioned to paint a mural to coincide with the Ladies Night Out sponsored by Berger Hospital the weekend of April 12, 2008. It took him a few months to paint this monstrosity. The mural spans 16′ x 8′ and is free standing. We hope you enjoy the piece he has painted.

Oh! Look it is Jennifer Haddox and a guest painter, Bernadette Carstensen, working on our second mural for the Vegas Nights. This piece was originally designed by Hans Vanhooser and completed by Owen Carstensen, Jennifer Haddox, Bernadette Carstensen, and yours truly, me! These are amazing! Enjoy them and leave some comments.
